Title	CHAPEL WHALEY AND DISTRICT GAS COMPANY
Description	A Chapel-en-le-Frith gas order of 1876 authorised an Elias Gaskell to maintain and continue a gas supply and to construct new works in the parish. The Chapel-en-le-Frith, Chinley and District Gas Co Ltd was formed in 1910 to acquire this undertaking.In 1911 an Act of Parliament was obtained which authorised the purchase of the Whaley Bridge Gas Co Ltd and incorporated the Chapel, Whaley and District Gas Co. This Act also extended the company's area of supply to include Fairfield (formerly within Buxton Corporation's area of supply). The CW&DGCo's main works were at Chapel-en-le-Frith alongside the Smithy Brook with additional works at Bradshaw Edge, Whaley Bridge. In 1926 new works were built at Whaley Bridge and the older works in Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whaley were closed down. In 1949 the undertaking became part of the Peak Group of the NWGB. The main records series in this collection is financial. There is correspondence and a small amount of estate material. Financial records include accounts, stocks and shares and wages sheets (1938 - 1952).
