| Description | The first undertaking to supply gas was the Middleton Gas Co formed by AoP in 1846. This company was reformed and re-incorporated with the same name in 1854 and the new company inherited all of the assets and liabilities of the original company. In 1861 the Middleton and Tonge Improvement Commissioners purchased the undertaking and extended the area of supply to Thornham, Great Heaton and other places. The works were at Townley St / Corporation St in Middleton. The undertaking passed to the Town Council and the Corporation until in 1949 it became part of the Oldham - Rochdale Group of the NWGB. |
