DescriptionThe Bacup Gas and Coke Co was established in 1835 and registered in 1853. Its works were built at Cloughfold. A gas company in Rossendale was also formed in 1853 and an agreement was made by both companies to merge and seek statutory powers. In 1854 the two undertakings were incorporated as the Rossendale Union Gas Co. The main works at Bacup were initially used while a new works at Cloughfold near Rawtenstall was built in 1854 -5. Additional gas was supplied from private mills while the new works was under construction. The works at Cloughfold started producing gas in 1856. The area of supply included Waterfoot, Rawtenstall, Cliviger, Wolfenden and part of the township of Todmorden. Further Acts of 1865 and 1876 extended the undertakings lands. In 1937 the undertaking was acquired by the UKGC and by 1939 the undertaking was supplying gas to the Ramsbottom Gas Co. In 1949 Rossendale UGC became part of the Bury - Rossendale Group of the NWGB. This collection includes minutes, site plans and drawings and two Acts of Parliament. [1854 - 1947]
